About The Position

The Peer Tutor provides academic support to Columbia College students in STEM and Writing disciplines through individual and small-group tutoring sessions. Working as a member of the Stafford Learning Commons, Peer Tutors help students strengthen course content knowledge, develop effective study strategies, build research skills, practice academic writing, and build confidence as independent learners. Peer Tutors create a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive learning environment while maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and high standards of academic integrity. Tutors receive ongoing training and are expected to participate in professional development consistent with College and CRLA tutoring best practices.

Requirements

  • Current Columbia College student in good academic standing
  • Completion of the course(s) to be tutored with a grade of A or B (or department approval)
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (preferred within coursework)
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and dependability
  • Ability to explain technical concepts clearly and patiently
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with Learning Commons staff.
  • Ability to satisfy, within the parameters set by the College and consistent with applicable federal, state and local laws, a criminal background check as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous tutoring, mentoring, teaching, supplemental instruction, or peer leadership experience.
  • Strong interest in helping fellow students succeed academically.
  • Willingness to complete CRLA tutor training and participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Experience working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one and small-group tutoring in approved subject areas. These include, but are not limited to: Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Business (Finance, Accounting, etc.), Nursing, All Writing Subjects
  • Assist students in understanding course concepts while encouraging independent learning and critical thinking.
  • Help students develop effective study habits, problem-solving skills, and learning strategies.
  • Encourage student confidence and academic persistence through positive and supportive interactions.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries by guiding students without completing coursework for them.
  • Attend all scheduled tutoring appointments, shifts, meetings, and required training sessions.
  • Maintain accurate tutoring records and appointment documentation using designated software.
  • Communicate professionally and promptly with Learning Commons staff regarding scheduling or availability.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with institutional policies and FERPA.
  • Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
  • Refer students to additional Learning Commons services, library resources, faculty, or campus support services when appropriate.
  • Promote the use of tutoring services through positive engagement with students.
  • Assist with Learning Commons events, outreach activities, and student engagement initiatives as assigned
  • Participate in ongoing tutor training and professional development.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Foster a respectful, professional, and student-centered environment in all interactions.
  • Attend work reliably and on time during scheduled hours; work additional hours as needed.
  • Practice superior customer service.
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as assigned.
