About The Position

The Peer Support Specialist for the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program reports directly to the SSVF Program Manager. This position provides emotional and practical support to veterans and their families, drawing on lived experience to build trust, encourage engagement, and promote stability. The Peer Support Specialist works collaboratively with case management staff to assist clients in navigating housing and support services. This position has access to confidential and private information. This position is subject to grant funding; however, if the funding ends, the position may be eliminated. It is essential that confidentiality and privacy be observed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Must have lived experience with homelessness, military service, or recovery from substance use disorder
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to engage, motivate, and support individuals facing complex life challenges.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills, including data entry and Microsoft Office.
  • Valid Driver's License, clean driving record, and access to a registered and insured vehicle for client visits.
  • Must be able to successfully pass a criminal background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate degree preferred
  • Certification or training as a peer support specialist preferred.
  • Experience working with veterans, homeless, or at-risk populations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized peer support to veterans and their families, promoting recovery, self-sufficiency, and long-term housing stability
  • Utilize lived experience professionally and appropriately to build trust, foster engagement, and encourage participation in services.
  • Assist clients in accessing community resources, including housing, healthcare, and supportive services.
  • Collaborate closely with case managers and team members to ensure coordinated and effective delivery
  • Conduct outreach and engagement efforts in a variety of settings, including shelters, encampments, community locations, and other high-risk or unsheltered environments
  • Provide support during crisis situations by offering emotional support and connecting clients to emergency services and resources
  • Assist with team response efforts during community events and extreme weather conditions
  • Accurately document peer interactions, services provided, and client progress in program databases (e.g., HMIS) in accordance with agency standards
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to professional boundaries at all times
  • Attend and actively participate in team meetings, training, and supervision sessions
  • Support program operations by completing additional duties and special projects as assigned
