Peer Specialists help make Mobile Crisis Intervention Services welcoming, comfortable, supportive, and responsive to individuals who use them and their families. Drawing on personal experience and knowledge of navigating the greater system of care, they provide consumers with support, information, and assistance connecting with and obtaining community-based resources and services. The Peer Specialist conveys hope and provides psychoeducation, including information about recovery, rehabilitation, and crisis self-management. They assist in arranging services to which an individual is referred after a Mobile Crisis Intervention (MCI), and work with the individual and family to support the transition to follow-up services. All Peer Specialist staff receive training in recovery-focused peer support for Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and may assist with interventions involving individuals or families experiencing a crisis due to substance use disorders. They help explain how to access services, describe available self-help resources, and provide follow-up for people who may or may not be ready to accept help at initial contact. The ideal candidate is interested in working with both mental health and substance use recovery populations.
