Community Access is a pioneer in supportive housing and social services for people with mental health concerns in NYC. The Residential Crisis Support program, also known as "The Respite," is a residential mental health crisis alternative-to-hospitalization program. It offers short-term, Peer-led care in a supportive, home-like environment. Guests learn and practice recovery and relapse prevention skills to manage their current crisis and develop tools for future challenges, aiming to avoid hospital-based care. Services are recovery-oriented, provided 24/7, and include peer support, self-advocacy education, and self-help training. Guests are encouraged to maintain their daily activities and participate in the residence's operations. The maximum stay is 28 days. The Intensive Crisis Residence (ICR), inspired by the Soteria model, also serves as an alternative to psychiatric hospitalization for individuals experiencing acute psychiatric crises, offering a stabilizing, home-like environment with 24-hour peer support and treatment. The ICR aims to help guests develop awareness and skills for community reintegration within 28 days. It emphasizes shared home management, positive recovery expectations, validation of experiences, "being with" individuals, 1:1 support, and self-determination. Services are voluntary, and guests are encouraged to maintain community responsibilities. The program includes discharge planning focused on safety and wellness, with post-discharge follow-up health resource navigation support.
