About The Position

This residency program offers a unique opportunity for individuals in their final year of a DPT program or licensed therapists to gain specialized experience in pediatric physical therapy. Residents will spend over half of their time providing clinical services in three outpatient therapy departments (Orthopedic Rehabilitation Center, Spine Center, Pain Center) under the mentorship of experienced staff. The role involves assuming full responsibility for patient evaluations, planning and executing individualized treatment programs in accordance with Michigan state laws, and developing advanced treatment skills through continuing education and interdisciplinary collaboration. The remaining time will be dedicated to programmatic didactics, conducting a scientific inquiry project, and assisting with teaching responsibilities at Grand Valley State University. Upon completion, residents will present their project findings in Grand Rounds. Applications are reviewed four times annually, with flexible start dates based on program openings and applicant availability.

Requirements

Must be in your final year of your DPT school program or currently licensed therapist.
Graduate of Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) Accredited Physical Therapy Program.
Licensed in Michigan.
Possesses and maintains CPR certification to meet department/program protocol.
Membership in the American Physical Therapy Association.

Responsibilities

Provide clinical services to patients across 3 outpatient therapy departments with mentorship.
Assume full responsibility for evaluating patient’s need for physical therapy.
Plan and execute individual treatment programs in accordance with the laws and regulations of the State of Michigan.
Develop treatment skills through continuing education, mentoring meetings with physical therapy staff, physicians, and other clinicians.
Complete programmatic assigned didactics.
Conduct scientific inquiry project.
Assist with teaching responsibilities at Grand Valley State University as assigned per program requirements.
Present scientific inquiry project findings in Grand Rounds upon completion of Residency Program.
Provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by law and regulation.
Establish treatment goals in collaboration with patient and family as appropriate, and in collaboration with the treatment team.
Administer treatment for each patient according to the stated goals.
Delegate responsibilities to physical therapist assistants and rehabilitation technicians as appropriate.
Re-evaluate patient's status and effects of treatment.
Revise treatment plan as necessary.
Review revised goals with patient and family as appropriate.
Evaluate patient's need for medical equipment and order the appropriate equipment as necessary.
Evaluate equipment upon delivery and instruct patient, patient's family, and health care workers on its use.
Participate in planning for patient discharge by considering and communicating with patient, family, community support/services and environmental limitations.
Document patient's status and progress through initial evaluation, progress notes, and discharge summary according to established internal/external time standards and adherence to reimbursement guidelines.
Communicate with others to integrate physical therapy treatment with all aspects of patient care.
Participate in conferences/discussions and exchange of written records with other interdisciplinary team members to integrate physical therapy treatment plan.
Instruct the patient and the family in physical therapy procedures as part of the home program.
Provide written instructions as necessary.
Instruct the visiting public, medical students, physicians, and other professionals in the methods of and objectives in area of expertise.
Attend various meetings and in-services as designated.
Follow all hospital policy and procedures including but not limited to patient confidentiality and infection control.
Adhere to the Mary Free Bed Standards of Behavior when working with patients, coworkers, and members of the community.
Function as a patient advocate and maintain patient confidentiality.
Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members.

Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions.
