About The Position

Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a Pediatric Outpatient Staff Pharmacist PRN in Nashville, Tennessee. VUMC is a community dedicated to advancing health and wellness through patient care, education, and research. This role involves leadership in medication preparation, dosing, and providing patient-specific drug information. The pharmacist will aid in preventing and reporting medication errors and adverse drug reactions, fostering positive relationships with healthcare professionals, families, and patients, and engaging in continuous education. The position operates in a retail environment, filling discharge prescriptions, managing refills for complex patients, setting up mail services, and directly assisting patient families. The clinical component includes evaluating doses and indications against the MAR, submitting prior authorizations, and making direct interventions with providers. The role requires flexibility in shift times to cover scheduling gaps and PTO, with a minimum commitment of one day per week or two days every other week once fully trained. Current needs are primarily for mid-morning to closing shifts, with a weekend rotation every six weeks (3:00 pm - 11:00 pm).

Requirements

  • Current Tennessee Pharmacist License
  • Relevant Work Experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Less than 1 year of experience

  • Advanced knowledge of pharmaceutical quality assurance & compliance, including rules and regulations, process improvement, and quality assurance techniques.
  • Proficient understanding of computers and pharmaceutical computer applications for medication use processes (Novice level).
  • Proficiency in reviewing, preparing, and dispensing prescribed medications, including aseptic technique for sterile preparations (Novice level).
  • Intermediate proficiency in medication management, including determining clinical appropriateness, dose, indication, contraindications, adverse effects, and monitoring laboratory results.
  • Ability to provide drug information to healthcare professionals, patients, and families.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews drug orders and/or prescriptions to ensure the safe, appropriate and cost-effective use of medications.
  • Provides outstanding patient care by optimizing medication preparation and resolving medication-related problems.
  • Prepares and dispenses medications, provides drug information and manages medication therapy in accordance with federal, state and local regulations and hospital policy.
  • Supervises the activities of assigned support personnel and verifying the accuracy and appropriateness of all medications prepared by support personnel prior to dispensing to patients or dispensing to healthcare providers for administration to patients.
  • Fills discharge prescriptions, completes refills for complex patient populations, sets up mail, and helps families of patients directly.
  • Evaluates doses and indications with their MAR, submits prior authorizations, and makes interventions with providers directly.
