About The Position

The Pediatric Optometry Residency Program at Children’s Wisconsin provides advanced clinical education in various pediatric ocular and vision problems, focusing on patient management and treatment. The residency program aims to provide a comprehensive experience in a collaborative optometry/ophthalmology academic hospital setting. The curriculum of the program utilizes the mission, goals, and objectives of the residency as its basic elements. The residency program is designed to provide the resident experience in the delivery of pediatric primary eye care to patients from ages birth to 18 years. The length of training is 12 months, from July 1 to June 30.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an ACOE (American Council on Optometric Accreditation) accredited school or college of optometry.
  • 3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Passed all parts of NBEO (National Board of Examiners in Optometry), including TMOD (Treatment and Management of Ocular Disease).
  • Wisconsin optometry license within 1-year of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Completed the necessary requirements for Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry.

Responsibilities

  • Examine the patient, formulate a treatment plan, discuss the treatment plan with the faculty, and communicate the plan to the patient and/or patient’s family.
  • Track clinical experiences via patient logs.
  • Attend all pediatric eye lectures alongside the ophthalmology residents.
  • Attend the case conference series weekly on Wednesday mornings.
  • Perform scholarly activities, including preparing a poster, lectures, case reports, reading articles, article discussions, and development of patient logs.
  • Complete at least one poster prior to graduation.
  • Complete at least two case reports prior to graduation.
  • Present at the annual Residency Day event at the University of Missouri – St. Louis College of Optometry.
  • Track academic activities in their academic/scholarly log.
  • Other duties as assigned.
