About The Position

Join the Pediatric Emergency Department at UVA Children’s, a growing specialty environment serving approximately 18,500 patient visits annually. You will work alongside specialty-trained pediatric nurses and an interdisciplinary team, while developing skills in pediatric assessment, triage support, IV insertion, blood collection, and 12-lead EKGs. As a Pediatric Emergency Department Technician, you will support children with a wide range of urgent and emergent needs, including medical, surgical, and behavioral health presentations. You will help create a safe, efficient, and family-centered experience from arrival through discharge or inpatient admission. This is a consistently active clinical environment where technicians remain engaged, recognize changing priorities, and respond within their approved scope. Your contributions help nurses and other clinicians focus on the highest level of their practice while ensuring patients receive attentive, timely care.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Health Care Provider BLS Certification required. For Non-Certified team members hired prior to May 11, 2026, certification is not required, as relevant experience will be accepted in its place.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Emergency Medical Technician in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Military Corpsmen/Medic (Combat Medic Specialist /Tactical Combat Casualty Care /Tactical Paramedic) NREMT certification or Tactical Responder Certification
  • LPN license in the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Graduate of a certified nursing program
  • Patient Care Technician Certification, preferred National Center of Competency Testing
  • Currently enrolled student nurses who have successfully completed the Clinical Experience and Didactic

Nice To Haves

  • Emergency Medical Technician in the Commonwealth of Virginia strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Work at the top of your scope while supporting pediatric nurses in triage and the main treatment area.
  • Obtain and monitor vital signs, recognize changes in patient condition, and promptly communicate findings to the care team.
  • Support rapid patient assessment and prioritization in a fast-paced emergency environment.
  • Perform or receive training in IV insertion, blood draws, and 12-lead EKGs.
  • Assist with specimen collection, diagnostic testing, patient comfort, personal care, mobility, safety, and environmental readiness.
  • Support the triage nurse by monitoring patients, completing appropriate interventions, and remaining attentive to children and families waiting for care.
  • Accurately document patient information throughout the plan of care.
  • Maintain clean, safe, organized, and appropriately stocked clinical spaces.
  • Recognize physical or behavioral responses that may pose a safety concern and report them immediately.
  • Collaborate with pediatric nurses, providers, and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Participate in departmental safety initiatives, required education, and ongoing professional development.
