About The Position

The PCT performs nonprofessional direct and indirect patient care activities, including meeting patients’ personal, physical, and comfort needs, under the supervision of a registered professional nurse. The position provides high-quality patient care in coordination with licensed medical staff. The role is based in the 6th-floor medical/surgical area at Wheeling Hospital in Wheeling, West Virginia, and is scheduled for 36 hours per week.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
• Ability to communicate effectively with staff and patients.
• Ability to adapt to changing environments.

• Prior patient care experience.

Responsibilities

• Observe and immediately report patient concerns or changes in condition to a registered nurse.
• Assist the registered nurse with admissions, transfers, discharges, and general patient care duties.
• Record vital signs, including temperature and blood pressure, and record oral intake and output; assist with personal hygiene and other comfort measures.
• Assist with specimen collection and other activities for assigned patients.
• Maintain a clean and safe environment to help prevent or control infections and promote the safety of patients, visitors, and employees.
• Report equipment repairs to appropriate personnel promptly and according to departmental procedures.
• Prepare patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures according to departmental procedures.
• Communicate nutrition issues to the registered nurse, including poor appetite or a stated lack of understanding about diet changes.
• Assist with administrative tasks that support department operations.
• Answer patient call bells and relay messages to appropriate personnel.
• For facilities with specialty accreditation requirements, complete annual required education as defined by accreditation standards; training may include computer-based learning, trainings, in-services, and competency validation.
