About The Position

St. Peter's Hospital is seeking a Full-Time PBX Operator for the Night Shift. The ideal candidate will operate telecommunication equipment, including a computerized switchboard console, and perform basic keyboard functions. This role involves directing incoming and in-house calls, handling transfers, paging, conference calls, and overhead paging. In emergency situations, the PBX Operator must initiate appropriate paging and contact personnel in a timely manner. The position requires excellent communication skills, a clear voice, good English, and the ability to remain calm and professional, especially when dealing with difficult customers. As first responders to emergencies, they are responsible for announcing and dispatching appropriate parties for Code Blue, Code Yellow, and other emergency situations. The role demands good organization and short-term memory, as well as the ability to take and write clear, understandable notes quickly. Documentation of daily operations and emergency situations in the office logbook is also required. The PBX Operator will maintain on-call schedules and perform other switchboard-related functions. Assistance during hours other than scheduled may be requested by a supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Switchboard experience required.
  • Able to operate a computerized switchboard console.
  • Able to perform basic keyboard functions including typing.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Well organized with good short-term memory.
  • Able to take/write clear notes quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Operate a computerized switchboard console and perform basic keyboard functions.
  • Direct all incoming and in-house calls through transfers, paging, conference calls, overhead paging, and faxing.
  • Initiate appropriate paging and contacting personnel in a timely manner during emergency situations.
  • Process and triage all customer calls in a clear voice using good English.
  • Remain calm and maintain professionalism when handling delicate or volatile customers.
  • Announce and dispatch appropriate parties in a clear voice for Code Blue, Code Yellow, and emergency situations.
  • Take/write clear notes quickly so that they can be retrieved and understood at a later time.
  • Document necessary information concerning daily and emergency situations in the office logbook.
  • Maintain any necessary additions, deletions, and changes to daily operations on-call schedules, and switchboard related functions.
  • Assist in working hours other than scheduled when requested by supervisor.
