About The Position

Reporting to the Payroll Manager, the Payroll Supervisor oversees the unionized payroll team responsible for the accurate, timely, and compliant delivery of full-cycle bi-weekly payroll for Seaspan Shipyards’ hourly unionized employees. This role provides day-to-day leadership, guidance, and oversight to Payroll Clerks and Timekeepers, ensuring payroll processing, reconciliations, remittances, and reporting activities are completed in accordance with company policies, collective agreements, and legislative requirements. The Payroll Supervisor also supports continuous improvement initiatives, payroll system enhancements, stakeholder collaboration, and regulatory compliance activities, while serving as a backup to the Payroll Manager as required. This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary degree supplemented by advanced coursework in payroll and accounting.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience processing full-cycle multi-company payrolls.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a leadership or supervisory capacity.
  • Completion of the National Payroll Institute (NPI) Compliance Practitioner certification.
  • Completion of, or active enrolment in, the National Payroll Institute Certified Payroll Manager program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of union contract interpretation (required).
  • Strong functional and technical payroll expertise.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to lead and support payroll teams in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced setting.
  • Customer-focused with a commitment to providing responsive and professional service.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively across teams.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislation, regulations, policies, and collective agreements with professionalism and discretion.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee the accurate and timely processing of complex, full-cycle bi-weekly payrolls, including regular payroll, adjustments, retroactive payments, and off-cycle payments.
  • Ensure payroll operations comply with legislation, collective agreements, company policies, and regulatory requirements.
  • Review payroll reconciliations, audits, and reporting to ensure payroll accuracy and compliance.
  • Monitor payroll workflows and deadlines to ensure service levels and operational requirements are consistently met.
  • Support payroll year-end activities, including T4s, reconciliations, statutory reporting, and audits. Works within established systems to deliver prescribed outcomes for a designated area of financial control.
  • Resolve queries from internal or external customers by providing information on complex processes and the related policies, referring to others where necessary for the interpretation of policy.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, training, and performance support to payroll team members.
  • Foster a collaborative, customer-focused, and high-accountability team environment.
  • Stays up to date on collective agreement requirements and interprets these in day-to-day practices where necessary.
  • Identifies the needs for system performance to process payroll information accurately and efficiently, reporting these needs to the manager. Leads the execution in coordinating with Business Analysts to ensure payroll needs from the system are met.
