Payroll Specialist

Versys ElectricalEdmonton, AB
Onsite

About The Position

At Versys, our strength is our people. We deliver world-class service on North America's most demanding energy projects because of the teams we build, teams that are detail-driven, dependable, and genuinely invested in supporting one another. We're growing. As our technician workforce expands across Canada and the US, we're adding a Payroll Specialist to our established payroll team at our Edmonton Office. This is a full-time, in-office role with vacation time, health benefits, and Employee Share Ownership Plan (ESOP) opportunities. You'll join a team that already runs full-cycle payroll across two countries, and you'll grow with it. Reporting into our payroll function, you'll own accurate, timely payroll processing across our Canadian and US operations, ensure compliance on both sides of the border, and bridge our HR systems with core accounting. The role is a genuine hybrid of disciplines: alongside payroll, you'll take on broader accounting support, and your scope can flex across payroll and accounting as the team and the business grow.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of payroll experience, ideally in a multi-entity or cross-border environment.
  • Experience processing payroll for both employees and contractors.
  • Experience with multi-currency payroll and cross-border workforce payments.
  • Strong understanding of payroll compliance, payroll accounting, and reconciliations on both the Canadian and US sides.
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Acumatica and ADP is a major asset.

Responsibilities

  • Process bi-weekly, semi-monthly, and weekly full-cycle payroll for salaried and hourly employees across Canadian and US entities.
  • Verify timesheets, calculate wages, and process bonuses, commissions, and overtime.
  • Administer deductions and remittances on both sides of the border, including Canadian source deductions (CPP, EI, income tax), US federal and state withholding, benefits (RRSP, 401(k), health and welfare), garnishments, and court-ordered levies.
  • Manage multi-currency payroll and cross-border workforce payments for both employees and contractors.
  • Manage employee profiles, time and attendance, and tax updates.
  • Book payroll journal entries, reconcile accounts, and maintain clean data flow between payroll and general ledger systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve system interface and data discrepancy issues.
  • Support month-end and quarter-end close, including journal entries and account reconciliations.
  • Assist with accounts payable and receivable, contractor and vendor payment processing, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Take on additional accounting clerk responsibilities as team needs and business growth dictate.
  • Generate and reconcile customized payroll and accounting reports for month-end and quarter-end close.
  • Assist with Canadian and US tax filings and year-end reporting (T4, ROE, W-2) and provide audit support.
  • Ensure strict compliance with Canadian and US wage and hour laws, confidentiality policies, and internal financial controls.
  • Serve as a point of contact for employee inquiries on pay, time-off balances, and benefit deductions across both countries.
