About The Position

The Diocese of Corpus Christi is seeking a Payroll Specialist to manage the processing of payroll for the parishes, missions, and schools. The Payroll Specialist reports to the Director of Human Resources and provides payroll and compliance services to the Diocese of Corpus Christi. Payroll services include payroll processing, position management, and state and federal wage law compliance. MINISTERIAL CHARACTER: The Bishop is the visible principle and foundation of unity in the particular Church (The Diocese) entrusted to him. In a unique and visible way, he makes Christ's mission present and enduring as Shepherd of the Christian Community. In order to fulfill his mission, the Bishop employs suitable, chosen collaborators (clerics, religious, or lay people). He shares with them the apostolic mission and entrusts various responsibilities to them. Each position employed in the Diocese of Corpus Christi helps to extend the ministry of the Bishop in particular ways as outlined in the job duties and responsibilities. Therefore, the employee in this position is closely connected to and assists the Bishop in the performance of his ministry and thereby engages in ministry for the church.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance or accounting or related field; experience in similar position will count on a year-for-year basis
  • Minimum of three years’ experience with an accounting software package including payroll processing
  • Basic understanding of finance and accounting principles including general ledger
  • Basic knowledge of state and federal employment and payroll guidelines
  • Ability to perform research on state and federal regulations pertaining to compensation and labor guidelines
  • Strong mathematics skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, Word
  • Ability to operate general office equipment and computer hardware including 10-key by touch
  • Must have extensive experience with computerized accounting system
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills with attention to customer service
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple projects and prioritize tasks
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team

  • Must submit to employment required screenings including criminal background, MVR and drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • As an integral part of your ministry for the Church as carried out in this position, support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic ministry and the mission of the Diocese of Corpus Christi in both your professional and personal life
  • Act as a witness to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Continuously grow in your ministry by participating in religious ceremonies, training sessions, and reflection activities as directed
  • Review and process bi-weekly and monthly payroll ensuring accuracy with wage rates, benefits deductions, federal income tax withholding, FLSA and DOL status
  • Evaluate and identify areas of improvement within the payroll process
  • Adhere to legal and ethical standards pertaining to personnel matters
  • Work with cross-departmental stakeholders to ensure payroll services such as the diocesan retirement plan, leave accounting, and benefits are delivered accurately and according to policy and procedures
  • Follow Internal Revenue Service, U.S. Department of Labor, and Fair Labor Standards Act guidelines, and ensure all government documents such as Form W-2 are accurate and in compliance with respective agency guidelines
  • Perform other duties assigned
