About The Position

Paper Trails is a Maine-based payroll, HR, and human capital management firm serving small and mid-sized businesses across New England. We're looking for a Payroll & HCM Specialist to own a portfolio of 150–200 small business clients - processing their payrolls, handling tax filings, and being the friendly expert they call when something gets tricky.

Requirements

  • 2–3+ years of payroll processing experience, ideally in a service bureau or multi-client environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of federal, state, and multi-state payroll tax and wage-and-hour law.
  • Experience with isolved or comparable HCM/payroll platforms (ADP, Paychex, Paylocity, Paycom, UKG, etc.) strongly preferred.
  • Background in accounting, business, or finance (degree preferred).
  • FPC or CPP certification preferred.
  • Confident with Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel.
  • Clear written and verbal communicator who can explain a complex tax issue in plain English.
  • Trustworthy with confidential client and employee financial information.

Responsibilities

  • Process weekly payrolls for your client portfolio.
  • Serve as the go-to expert on payroll, tax, and compliance questions for clients.
  • Configure and support isolved features like timekeeping, onboarding, benefits administration, and custom reporting.
  • Manage multi-state tax filings, garnishments, retirement contributions, and unemployment verifications.
  • Deliver responsive, human service to clients.
