Reporting to the Finance Director, the Payroll and Financial Administrator will be responsible for acting as the first point of contact for payroll related enquiries, troubleshooting and resolving payroll processing issues, processing payroll and reconciling payroll distribution. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for making recommendations on budget allocations involving multiple sources of revenue and/or recoveries, identifying and resolving individual financial discrepancies, updating and maintaining records, and providing advice and data to support the development of business cases and analytics for departmental initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in finance/accounting or acceptable combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Minimum three (3) years of related financial management experience, including experience monitoring department budgets.
  • Experience processing payroll and troubleshooting and resolving payroll discrepancies.
  • Experience classifying and processing invoices in FIS or equivalent systems.
  • Experience with the University’s Financial Information System (FIS), Human Resources Information System (HRIS) and Research Information System (RIS) or equivalent systems
  • Advanced computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and SharePoint.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate complex financial procedures to a range of audiences with varying levels of financial knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise a high level of confidentiality, professionalism, good judgment, initiative, tact and discretion.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and demonstrated ability to work independently while also being an effective team player.
  • Strong customer services orientation.

Responsibilities

  • Processing payroll
  • Preparing and/or processing journal entries
  • Entering salary and/or personnel information in HRIS
  • Monitoring department budget to ensure expenditures remain within budgeted allocations
  • Generating standard financial reports
  • Verifying that HRIS transactions are processed according to applicable policies, procedures, collective agreements, and applicable legislated requirements
  • Applying the University Guide to Financial Management and other applicable policies, agency and regulatory requirements
  • Liaising with internal contacts to resolve accounting, payroll and/or HRIS processing issues
