About The Position

This position is for a Patient Sitter in the Emergency Department. The primary role is to maintain constant visual observation of the patient at bedside, ensuring they are never left alone or out of sight unless specifically instructed by the nurse. The sitter will obtain reports from the nurse regarding patient needs, diagnosis, and any special considerations. They will accurately record data, notify the nurse of any changes or untoward events, and assist with redirection if needed. The sitter will function cooperatively as a team member, respond to changing patient needs, and communicate professionally and respectfully with patients, families, and healthcare staff. They must also comply with hospital regulations, understand emergency codes, and maintain patient privacy and security.

Requirements

  • Six (6) months experience as a caregiver in any setting.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency (HSE).
  • Valid American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
  • Valid, unrestricted, insurable driver’s license.
  • Resume and references are required.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains verbal report from the patient’s nurse regarding care needs, diagnosis, barriers, and special considerations.
  • Positions self in patient room at bedside to maintain constant visual observation of the patient.
  • Never leaves the patient alone or out of sight unless specifically instructed by the nurse.
  • Accurately and legibly records data collected.
  • Notifies registered nurse of any untoward events, behavioral changes, or violent behavior.
  • Obtains instruction from nurse regarding ambulation limitations and redirection strategies.
  • Observes patient’s activity and behavior and communicates regularly to the nurse.
  • Receives direction from the nurse regarding what to report, to whom, and how.
  • Functions cooperatively as a team member.
  • Responds as directed by House Supervisor to changing patients/changing units.
  • Communicates in a professional manner and demonstrates respect for patient, families/significant other and other health care members.
  • Complies with all hospital rules, regulations and nursing standards.
  • Verbalizes understanding and responsibilities during all TMC emergency codes.
  • Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information.
  • Uses and discloses only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
