About The Position

The Patient Sitter in the Emergency Department is responsible for maintaining constant visual observation of patients to ensure their safety and well-being. This role involves obtaining reports from nurses, monitoring patient behavior and activity, and communicating any changes or concerns to the nursing staff. The sitter must comply with hospital policies, maintain patient privacy, and respond appropriately to emergency codes. This position operates under Navajo/Indian Preference in Employment Policy, giving primary preference to enrolled members of the Navajo Nation and secondary preference to members of other federally recognized Indian tribes.

Requirements

  • Valid, unrestricted insurable driver’s license.
  • Six (6) months experience as a caregiver in any setting.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency (HSE).
  • Valid American Heart Association (AHA) certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and maintain certification.
  • Resume and references are required.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains verbal report from the patient’s nurse regarding care needs, diagnosis, communication barriers, and special considerations.
  • Maintains constant visual observation of the patient from the bedside, never leaving the patient alone or out of sight unless instructed by the nurse.
  • Accurately and legibly records collected data.
  • Notifies the registered nurse of any untoward events, behavioral changes, or violent behavior.
  • Obtains instructions from the nurse regarding ambulation limitations and redirection strategies.
  • Observes patient activity and behavior, communicating regularly with the nurse.
  • Functions cooperatively as a team member and responds to directions from the House Supervisor.
  • Communicates in a professional manner and demonstrates respect for patients, families, and healthcare members.
  • Complies with all hospital rules, regulations, and nursing standards.
  • Verbalizes understanding and responsibilities during all TMC emergency codes.
  • Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information, using and disclosing only necessary information.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
