About The Position
The Patient Caregiver works under the direction of a licensed professional nurse, assisting with patient care needs and maintaining continuous observation to help keep patients safe. The role includes helping with personal care, mobility, toileting, hygiene, and eating under the nurse’s discretion, as well as communicating patient care activities and changes in health status to nursing staff. The Patient Sitter communicates regularly with the assigned RN, works collaboratively with the healthcare team, and does not leave the patient without RN approval and relief. The position title indicates a part-time 3 p.m.–11 p.m. shift in Farmville.
Requirements
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Responsibilities
- Assist patients with personal care, including washing hands and face, oral care, bathing, dressing, mobility, toileting, personal hygiene, and eating, under the nurse’s discretion.
- Report care activities performed to nursing staff.
- Maintain open communication with nursing staff regarding the patient’s medical and emotional condition.
- Report changes in the patient’s health status.
- Ensure patient safety through continuous observation.
- Accompany patients to clinical tests and procedures when they are off the unit.
- Participate in required staff meetings and in-services.
- Assist patients with mobility around the unit and room, and to and from the bathroom, under the nurse’s discretion.
- Assist the nurse or CNA with ambulating patients who require a person assist, under the nurse’s discretion.
- Communicate regularly with the RN assigned to the patient.
- Communicate appropriately with patients and families, avoiding topics that could upset them.
- Work collaboratively with all members of the healthcare team.
- Promote a positive public image and approach toward staff, physicians, patients, families, and the public.
- Remain with the patient unless the RN approves the sitter’s departure and provides relief.
- Be flexible with the work schedule and help cover sitter needs.
