About The Position

The Patient Service Specialist provides daily front-office support, ensuring smooth patient flow, accurate registration, and exceptional customer service. This role is essential in creating a welcoming environment, supporting clinical teams, and maintaining accurate patient information in a fast-paced medical practice. Guthrie Corning Centerway offers primary care and specialist services in more than 22 areas of medicine, giving employees exposure to a wide variety of specialties and healthcare services. The Corning Office Support Services role provides exposure to many aspects of medical office operations and interaction with providers, patients, and multiple healthcare departments. The Patient Service Specialist provides direct, daily operational front office support in a manner consistent with Guthrie Medical Group’s Service Excellence Standards. The Patient Service Specialist will continually demonstrate Patient Centeredness, Teamwork, and Excellence in the daily performance of their duties. This position requires the ability to be self-motivated, flexible, punctual, detail oriented, have good time management skills and have excellent communication skills.

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED required.
  • Must be comfortable with computers and learning new applications.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from a Medical Office Assistant school preferred.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a customer service related field preferred.
  • Medical office experience and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Greeting every patient in a courteous, professional, and timely manner.
  • Answering telephones in a friendly and efficient manner, screening calls, taking messages, and providing information.
  • Scheduling and maintaining all patient appointments electronically, verifying patient information, assigning B# / MRN to new patients, and editing appointment schedules.
  • Registering patients, reviewing, verifying, and correcting patient demographic and insurance information, and scanning insurance cards.
  • Verifying eligibility for major insurance carriers and completing insurance forms, pre-certifications, and referrals.
  • Informing, quoting, and collecting copayments, insurance deductibles, deposits, or unpaid balances.
  • Performing daily cash-out and balancing.
  • Performing liaison duties between patients, physicians, hospital staff, and organizational departments, and keeping patients informed of any delays.
  • Adhering to departmental and organizational policies and attending meetings/huddles.
  • Prioritizing daily tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced, ever-changing work environment within a strong team structure.
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of patient health information in accordance with HIPAA compliance.
  • Assisting with and completing other projects or duties as assigned, including participating in quality initiatives.
