The Patient Service Representative is responsible for creating the initial electronic health record, which serves as the foundation for the patient medical record utilized by all members of the healthcare team. This role is crucial for preventing duplicate medical records, ensuring patient safety, and facilitating accurate billing. The representative will check in and register patients, obtain and verify demographic, guarantor, and insurance information, and discuss and collect co-pays and other out-of-pocket patient responsibilities. Maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA is paramount. The role also involves understanding insurance basics, Advocate Health contracts, and financial obligations, referring patients to Financial Advocates when necessary. Additionally, the representative must ensure compliance with government regulations such as HIPAA, EMTALA, and others, obtaining required signatures. They may also schedule appointments, coordinate cancellations and reschedules, and provide detailed information to patients regarding preparations and procedures. A key aspect of this role is creating a welcoming and professional environment through extraordinary customer service, answering phones, screening calls, and offering assistance to patients. The representative will also monitor and work assigned electronic health record work queues.
