The Patient Service Representative I is responsible for creating the initial electronic health record, which serves as the foundation for patient medical records used by the entire healthcare team. This role is crucial for preventing duplicate medical records, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining accurate billing. The representative will check in and register patients, obtain and verify demographic, guarantor, and insurance information, and collect co-pays and other patient financial responsibilities. Maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA is paramount. The role also involves understanding insurance basics, Advocate Health contracts, and financial obligations, referring patients to Financial Advocates when necessary. Additionally, the representative must ensure compliance with government regulations such as HIPAA, EMTALA, and others, obtaining required signatures. They may also schedule appointments, coordinate cancellations and reschedules, and provide detailed information about test preparations and facility directions. A key aspect of this role is creating a welcoming and professional environment through exceptional customer service, greeting patients, answering phones, and offering assistance with transportation, directions, and interpreter services. The representative will also monitor and work assigned electronic health record work queues according to department processes.
