This position is responsible for creating the initial electronic health record, which serves as the foundation for the patient medical record used by the entire healthcare team. It plays a crucial role in preventing duplicate medical records, which can lead to safety and billing issues. The role ensures patient safety by positively identifying patients before care delivery, adhering to organizational mandates and accrediting body requirements. Responsibilities include checking in and registering patients, verifying demographic, guarantor, and insurance information, and collecting co-pays and other patient financial responsibilities. Accurate information at registration ensures timely payment and prevents billing problems and patient complaints. The role requires maintaining strict confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA. The Patient Service Representative must understand insurance basics, recognize different plan types, and know which plans Advocate Health contracts with. They also need to understand and discuss financial obligations with patients and refer them to Financial Advocates when necessary. Additionally, the role involves ensuring compliance with government regulations such as HIPAA, EMTALA, and others by obtaining required signatures. The position may also involve scheduling appointments, coordinating cancellations and reschedules, and providing detailed information about test preparations and facility directions. A key aspect of the role is creating a welcoming and professional environment through exceptional customer service, greeting patients and visitors, answering phones, and offering assistance with transportation, directions, wheelchairs, and interpreter services. The representative will also monitor and work assigned electronic health record work queues according to department processes.
