Patient Safety Technician CDH Resource Team Full-time Evenings
About The Position
The Patient Safety Technician supports patient safety and reflects Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values. The role requires adherence to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, applicable policies and procedures, and relevant regulatory and accreditation standards. The technician provides direct and remote continuous observation for patients at risk of injuring themselves or others, offers appropriate comfort and emotional support, redirects unsafe behavior, and alerts clinical staff when needed. The position is on the CDH Resource Team, is full-time, and works evening shifts for 36 hours per week (0.9 FTE).
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire.
Responsibilities
- Remain at the bedside of an assigned patient at all times unless relieved by an appropriate staff member.
- Provide calming and reorienting conversation when a patient is agitated or confused.
- Identify and remove hazards from the patient and the patient’s environment, and report them as appropriate.
- May assist patients with activities of daily living as delegated by a supervising RN, including ambulating, toileting, bed making, and positioning.
- Provide continuous video monitoring of patients identified as at risk of causing injury to themselves or others.
- Offer basic comfort measures and address patients’ emotional needs using encouragement, distraction, coping strategies, cognitive stimulation activities, and de-escalation techniques within the scope of the role.
- Remotely monitor multiple patients through continuous video monitoring.
- Verbally redirect designated remote-observation patients from engaging in risk behaviors and summon appropriate staff using a communication device or STAT Alert Alarm when appropriate.
