Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • 3-4 years in a hospital setting.
  • Understanding of hospital operations.
  • Ability to convey warmth and interest in the patient as a person in their experience.
  • Interest in working with individuals in resolving problems.
  • Ability to identify patient-related trends and act as a facilitator for change.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as liaison between patients/families and the organization, and between the institution and the community it serves.
  • Provide a channel for patients/families to seek solutions to problems, concerns, and unmet needs.
  • Act as a patient advocate, enabling patients and their families to obtain solutions to problems by acting on their behalf with administration or any department or service.
  • Recommend alternative policies and procedures to improve service to patients.
  • Interpret the institution’s philosophy, policies, procedures, and services to patients, their families, and visitors.
  • Serve as co-chair of the Ethics Committee and be accessible to hospital staff, physicians, patients, and families if ethical issues arise in patient care.
  • Evaluate the level of patient satisfaction with the Hospital experience.
  • Collect data and channel information about patient care problems to appropriate departments and services to make recommendations for changes in Hospital Procedures and Policies.
  • Meet regularly with AVP of Quality monthly.
  • Prepare quarterly reports detailing problems, concerns, issues, and resolutions.
  • Annually submit a summary of the year’s activities, goals, and objectives, and any recommendations for improving patient satisfaction.
  • Participate in organizational ethics functions to improve outcomes by respecting patient rights.
  • Provide administrative functions for the bio-ethics committee (e.g., agenda, attendance sheet, minutes).
  • Create and/or revise policies and procedures as appropriate and as assigned.
  • Ensure Bayonne Medical Center's full compliance with Department of Health and accrediting agencies' standards for patient rights and responsibilities of the individual.
  • Maintain patients' advance directives filed alphabetically.
  • Make advance directives readily available for nursing supervisors 24/7 in the nursing office.
  • Assist patient(s) in completion of advance directives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
