The Patient Care Technician is an important member of the patient care team and works under the direction of and in assistance to a Registered Nurse. The role provides delegated, direct patient care interventions, including sterile and non-sterile procedures, and helps maintain a safe environment for assigned patients. The technician completes assigned work, monitors patients for changes in condition and reports those changes to the RN, documents completed work, and records and reports pertinent observations. The position also uses clerical skills to support efficient workflow and safe, quality, patient-centered care and continuity of care. Independent clinical decision-making is outside the scope of this position; clinical questions should be referred to a provider or nurse. The position coordinates with the interdisciplinary care team to carry out the identified plan of care and support expected outcomes. Care is guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, with an emphasis on caring relationships, uninterrupted moments with patients, unconditional acceptance, respect, advocacy, ethical practice, effective communication, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. The technician also supports colleagues and students, participates in learning and professional development, and uses appropriate resources to provide safe, effective, evidence-based, and financially responsible care. This is a full-time, on-site, patient-facing position on a 12-hour night shift, working 36 hours per week. It has no supervisory or budget responsibility. The role involves physical activities such as frequent standing, walking, pulling, and pushing, and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. Working conditions include frequent exposure to infectious diseases and occasional exposure to combative patients and needle sticks.
