About The Position

Under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse, this role assists with activities of daily living, provides basic nursing care, and helps maintain a safe and clean environment. The position requires participation in continuing education and adherence to Medical Center policies and procedures for quality assurance and improvement.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • Completion of Nurse Assistant course or equivalent, required.
  • OR Prior experience as a Nursing Attendant or equivalent, required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, and follow written and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to work in diversified settings.
  • Ability to lift, turn, position, etc. Patients, as required.

Nice To Haves

  • NYS Nurse Attendant certification, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Functions as a co-worker to the nurse and a key member of the nursing care team, organizing patient care assignments and setting priorities.
  • Alerts RN co-worker to changes in patient status, such as alterations in comfort, skin integrity, or breathing patterns.
  • Documents patient care and status changes on appropriate chart forms and communicates routine information to the RN periodically during the shift.
  • Assists the RN in providing for ADL needs of patients, including preparing patients for meals, feeding, providing nourishment and water, bathing, oral hygiene, toileting, and maintaining mobility with range of motion exercises and ambulation.
  • Grooms patients, including shaving, as needed.
  • Participates with the RN in developing and utilizing a plan of care for assigned patients.
  • Maintains patient care units in a neat and orderly condition, including changing and making beds, cleaning bedside tables, stripping patient units upon discharge, removing and cleaning equipment, and preparing rooms for new admissions, transfers, and post-operative patients.
  • Assists the Registered Nurse by performing selected procedures and simple treatments, such as taking and recording vital signs, measuring and recording fluid intake and output, performing and processing EKGs, drawing and processing blood (within guidelines), obtaining specimens, administering enemas, weighing patients, shaving patients for procedures, performing simple procedures utilizing aseptic technique (e.g., applying and changing simple dressings), and performing simple respiratory treatments (e.g., oral suctioning).
  • Performs a variety of related duties, including assisting patients in and out of bed, ambulating, lifting, turning, and positioning patients; assisting with serving meals; transporting and accompanying patients to various departments; reporting missing or damaged equipment; maintaining non-patient rooms and patient care equipment; performing constant observation on selected patients; following Medical Center's policies and procedures for QA/QI efforts; and performing post-mortem care and transporting bodies.
  • Takes part in Nursing's continuing education policy by attending orientation programs, completing annual mandatory educational requirements, and attending staff development programs.
