About The Position

The Patient Care Technician-Float reflects Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values, follows its Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards. Under RN supervision, the technician performs basic patient care activities at Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital and Northwestern Medicine Valley West Hospital. The role also supports unit workflow and communication on an as-needed basis.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
One of the following: nursing student who has completed one clinical rotation; Certified Nursing Assistant; Certified Medical Assistant; or Emergency Medical Technician.
Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.

Nice To Haves

Phlebotomy experience.
Graduate of an accredited Nursing Assistant program or graduate of a phlebotomy course.

Responsibilities

Perform basic nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, measuring blood glucose, and recording intake and output.
Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating.
Report abnormal findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, or emotional conditions to nursing staff.
Help keep patient rooms clean and orderly.
Use flexibility, organization, multitasking, and critical thinking to prioritize and complete unit work as the needs of the unit, patients, and staff change; function under stressful situations.
Serve as a liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments.
Answer telephones, intercoms, and call lights politely, using appropriate telephone etiquette, and communicate information to appropriate staff, family, or patients.
Manage overall unit workflow with the charge RN and/or assistant manager, as needed.
Perform pre-census tasks and validate daily admission, discharge, and census lists, as needed.
