About The Position

The Patient Care Technician works in the 6 Main, Medical-Surgical department at UAB St. Vincent’s Birmingham, performing basic clinical and non-clinical patient care activities under supervision. The role assists patients with ambulation, personal care, and activities of daily living, and reports and documents changes in patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions. The technician also maintains patient rooms and medical equipment, performs certain technical care duties as directed by the staff nurse, and records vital signs, weight, and intake and output. The posting lists two schedules: full-time evenings from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM, Monday through Friday, and part-time days from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, every Saturday and Sunday. Benefits are available for eligible positions only.

Requirements

BLS Provider certification obtained within 30 days of hire or job transfer; American Heart Association or American Red Cross certification is accepted.
High school diploma equivalency or one year of applicable cumulative job-specific experience.

Responsibilities

Perform basic clinical and non-clinical patient care activities under supervision.
Assist patients with ambulation, including moving to a recliner, walking to the bathroom or down the hall, and getting safely to their vehicles when dismissed.
Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living.
Report findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff, and document necessary records.
Keep patient rooms clean and orderly and maintain medical equipment.
Perform technical patient care duties as directed by the staff nurse, including oxygen setup, Foley catheter care, pulse oximetry setup, specimen collection, and EKGs.
Obtain and record vital signs, weight, and intake and output.
Perform other duties as assigned.
