About The Position

University of Iowa Health Care, recognized as one of the best hospitals in the United States, is Iowa's only comprehensive academic medical center and a regional referral center. The Neuroscience Intermediate Unit (6 JCP) is a 47-bed intermediate and acute care neuroscience unit caring for an adult neurology and neurosurgical patient population requiring telemetry monitoring, ventriculostomies with intracranial pressure monitoring, and intensive neurological monitoring. Patient diagnoses include stroke, central nervous system (CNS) autoimmune diseases, surgeries of the brain and spinal cord, and neurological traumas involving the head, brain, and spinal cord. The unit has received numerous honors and awards, including Joint Commission Stroke Center of Excellence, Joint Commission Comprehensive Stroke Center, Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for stroke care, and The Joint Commission Designated Primary Stroke Center.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write and follow instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure
  • Carry out medical asepsis when performing skills and tasks including but not limited to phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, & Foley catheter removal and cares for patients who are medically isolated
  • Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative preparation of the skin, dressing changes, collecting specimens, applying binders, braces, etc
  • Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge including but not limited to phlebotomy, ECG lead/12 lead placement, and brace/pin site cares
  • Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges
  • Directly provide for patients' personal hygiene and comfort
  • Turn, positions and ambulates patients
  • Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies
  • Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patients' intake
  • Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output
  • Participate in nursing care conferences; report pertinent patient information and incidents to nurse in charge
  • Provide for patient comfort measures through social interactions
  • Share responsibility for preparation, proper use and care of equipment and supplies, and for neatness and cleanliness of unit
  • May assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures performed by physicians or nurse
  • Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards demonstrating proper use of approved disinfectants, cleaning products, and care of the housekeeping equipment
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units
