About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking to hire Patient Care Technicians in the Emergency Department (ED). Under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses, the ED Patient Care Technician will perform specific tasks to assist members of the Nursing team in providing patient care. The Emergency Department (ED) at the University Campus is a 57-bed department with dedicated Pediatric ED space, main ED space, and South Expansion space. Our ED is staffed by a multidisciplinary team including Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, Paramedics, Unit Assistants, Social Work, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine providers, Pharmacy, and our research team. The University Campus ED was the recipient of an Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award in 2025 for their collaboration and teamwork.

Requirements

Ability to read, write and follow instructions

Direct patient-care experience
Work experience in a health care environment
Strong written communication skills
Customer service experience
Certified Nursing Assistant
At least six months of recent Emergency Room experience and/or EMT-B certification

Responsibilities

Perform EKGs throughout the Emergency Department as well as throughout the entire hospital.
Set up rooms for patient admission.
Clean equipment, patient bedside area and nursing unit.
Transport patients by bed, cart or wheelchair.
Stock and supply patient rooms and Nursing unit.
Perform basic CPR as required.
Maintain patient confidentiality.
Assist patients with bedpans, urinals and perineal cleansing.
Perform patient personal hygiene such as bathing, toileting, feeding, dressing, grooming and oral care for patients.
Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
Take temperature, pulse and blood pressure.
Enter daily patient record charting in computer.
Transport equipment, specimens and supplies.
