About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Emergency Medicine is seeking to hire Patient Care Technicians in the Emergency Department (ED). Under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses, the ED Patient Care Technician will perform specific tasks to assist the Nursing team in providing patient care. The Emergency Department (ED) at the University Campus is a 57-bed department with specialized spaces for pediatric care, trauma/resuscitation, and a procedural room. The ED is staffed by a multidisciplinary team including Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, Paramedics, Unit Assistants, Social Work, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine providers, Pharmacy, and a research team. The ED was recognized with an Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Lantern Award in 2025 for its collaboration and teamwork.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.

  • At least six months of recent Emergency Room experience and/or EMT-B certification

Responsibilities

  • Perform EKGs throughout the Emergency Department and the entire hospital.
  • Set up rooms for patient admission.
  • Clean equipment, patient bedside area, and nursing unit.
  • Transport patients by bed, cart, or wheelchair.
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and Nursing unit.
  • Perform basic CPR as required.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Assist patients with bedpans, urinals, and perineal cleansing.
  • Perform patient personal hygiene such as bathing, toileting, feeding, dressing, grooming, and oral care.
  • Turn, position, and ambulate patients.
  • Take temperature, pulse, and blood pressure.
  • Enter daily patient record charting in the computer.
  • Transport equipment, specimens, and supplies.
