About The Position

This position is for a Patient Care Technician - Senior in the Emergency Department at UPMC Northwest. The role involves providing direct patient care, performing various nursing assistant responsibilities, and potentially advanced skills based on department needs. The technician will communicate effectively with the healthcare team, support safety in the workplace, and contribute to unit activities. They will also be responsible for documentation, adhering to policies, and performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Enrollment in a Nursing Program with: 2 years of healthcare experience and meet requirements of Patient Care Technician title OR 1 year of healthcare experience and completion of at least one clinical rotation OR successful completion of UPMC Student Nurse Internship program.
Successful completion of basic information system training.
Microcomputer experience preferred.
Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

Nice To Haves

Nursing Student that has completed one clinical rotation preferred
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.
May require successful completion of the appropriate UPMC cardiac rhythm course as determined by organizational guidelines and unit-based clinical operations.
ACLS preferred

Responsibilities

Perform UPMC core nursing assistant responsibilities including ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients).
Perform point of care testing (inc. blood glucose), weights, vital signs, I&O, telemetry monitor application/reapplication, HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs).
Perform simple dressings, placement and removal of restraints, bladder scan, all specimen collections, peripheral IV catheter removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, phlebotomy/venipuncture, and ticket to ride.
Achieve all standard competencies.
Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
Provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report changes in patient status.
Provide instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN.
Apply, monitor and remove patient restraints as per physician or hospital protocol.
Constructively receive feedback and direction.
Identify and communicate learning needs to the unit director.
Take action to improve knowledge, skills and performance.
Request assistance in planning and prioritizing activities as needed.
Participate in self-review as requested by the unit director.
Participate in project and committee work.
Suggest and support changes within the department.
Assume responsibility for assignment and view problems as challenges.
Demonstrate awareness of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department.
Support department-based projects and quality initiatives.
Strictly adhere to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital related information.
Comply with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions.
Document in the medical record according to established procedures.
Perform assigned work in a timely and productive manner.
Transport cardiac monitored patients within the hospital setting.
Complete department clerical functions as needed.
Perform in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Achieve and maintain competency and/or perform at least 1 or more of the following advanced skills based on department operational need: basic arrythmia, complex wound care, 12 lead EKG, and NG tubes clamping and removal.
