About The Position

The Patient Care Technician, CNA provides routine patient care and supports department services in accordance with established policies and procedures, as directed by a nurse or physician. The role performs core nursing assistant responsibilities, including activities of daily living, point-of-care testing, vital signs, intake and output, telemetry monitor application or reapplication, and measures to prevent hospital-acquired conditions. Additional routine skills include simple dressings, restraint placement and removal, bladder scans, specimen collection, 12-lead EKGs, and ticket-to-ride procedures. All required competencies must be achieved. Based on department operational needs, the technician will achieve and maintain competency in and/or perform at least one advanced skill, such as phlebotomy or venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia recognition, 12-lead EKGs, or NG tube clamping and removal. The role also supports patient procedures and therapies, communicates patient-status changes to the RN, provides patient and family instruction under RN direction, documents care, and completes related clerical and unit-support duties. The position is in 3 Main Acute Care at UPMC Cole and is listed as full-time, with every-other-weekend and rotating-holiday work. The posting lists a 7:00 AM–7:00 PM schedule, though its title also includes “7p-7a.”

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
At least one of the following: one year of general healthcare experience; six months as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire, transfer, or promotion; enrollment in a PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with at least one clinical rotation completed; or a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
Successful completion of the UPMC patient care technician class.
Successful completion of basic information system training.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
CPR certification meeting AHA standards, including didactic and skills demonstration components, within 30 days of hire.
Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Act 34 clearance.
Ability to achieve all required competencies and, based on department operational needs, competency in and/or performance of at least one advanced skill.
Access to medications is limited to distributing medication to the nurse.

Nice To Haves

Microcomputer experience preferred.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program.

Responsibilities

Provide routine patient care and support department services according to established policies and procedures.
Perform activities of daily living, including bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning, and repositioning patients.
Perform point-of-care testing, including blood glucose testing; obtain weights, vital signs, and intake and output; apply or reapply telemetry monitors; and use TEDs/SCDs for HAC and PSI prevention.
Perform simple dressings, place and remove restraints, conduct bladder scans, collect specimens, perform 12-lead EKGs, and complete ticket-to-ride procedures.
Achieve and maintain competency in and/or perform at least one advanced skill based on department needs, such as phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia skills, 12-lead EKGs, or NG tube clamping and removal.
Support department changes, projects, and quality initiatives; take responsibility for assignments and contribute to efficient department operations.
Report equipment malfunctions and communicate effectively with other departments and members of the healthcare team.
Respond to call lights and telephones, pass meal trays, and transport patients as part of universal unit activities.
Assist with patient procedures and activities of daily living, and assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
Provide feedback to the RN about patient care and report changes in patient status.
Provide instruction to patients and families under the direction of the RN.
Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints according to physician or hospital protocol.
Follow patient-care, information-handling, and safety policies and procedures, including standard precautions.
Document in the medical record according to established procedures and complete department clerical functions as needed.
Complete assigned work in a timely and productive manner and perform other duties as assigned.
Receive feedback and direction constructively, communicate learning needs, seek help with planning and prioritizing as needed, and participate in self-review when requested.
Maintain professional and respectful working relationships and support safety for patients and colleagues.
