The Patient Care Technician provides indirect and direct care under the supervision of licensed nursing staff, addressing patients’ dependency needs, including nutrition, hygiene, safety, and physical and psychological comfort, and supporting patients’ significant others. The position’s duties are performed in accordance with the organization’s mission, vision, and values. Work is primarily in patient settings and involves extensive interaction with patients, staff, physicians, family members, and visitors. The role involves lifting, bending, stooping, and exposure to blood-borne pathogens; it is classified as Level 1 under OSHA’s definition of occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens. The ED Hold Unit is a specialized inpatient nursing department within the Emergency Department. Its dedicated inpatient nursing team cares for admitted Medical-Surgical and Cardiac patients under inpatient or observation status, beginning care in collaboration with the ED nursing team. Inpatient-status patients transfer to inpatient units as beds become available, while observation-status patients remain in the ED Hold Unit for their stay. Department priorities include rapidly assuming care after admission orders are placed to alleviate ED congestion, delivering safe and high-quality inpatient-level care in non-traditional ED spaces, and promoting purposeful care planning to reduce length of stay and support timely transitions.
