The Patient Care Technician provides indirect and direct care under the supervision of licensed nursing staff. Care includes meeting patients’ dependency needs related to nutrition, hygiene, and safety, as well as providing physical and psychological comfort measures to patients and their significant others. The technician performs duties in accordance with the organization’s mission, vision, and values. Work is primarily performed in patient settings, with extensive interaction with patients, staff, physicians, family members, and visitors. The role involves lifting, bending, and stooping, and exposure to blood-borne pathogens. It has been evaluated as Level 1 under OSHA’s definition of occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens. The ED Hold Unit is a specialized inpatient nursing department located within the Emergency Department. Its dedicated inpatient nursing team cares for admitted Medical-Surgical and Cardiac patients under inpatient and observation status. Care begins in the Emergency Department in close collaboration with the ED nursing team. Patients with inpatient status transfer to inpatient units as beds become available; patients under observation remain in the ED Hold Unit for their stay. The department’s priorities are to assume care promptly after admission orders are placed to alleviate ED congestion, deliver safe and high-quality inpatient-level care in non-traditional ED spaces, and promote purposeful care planning to reduce length of stay and support timely transitions.
