About The Position

The Patient Care Tech (PCT) in Surgical Services, specifically within the Endoscopy GI Lab, is a full-time day position, Monday through Friday, 6 am to 2 pm, located at UAB St. Vincent's Birmingham. This role involves performing basic clinical and non-clinical patient care activities under supervision, assisting operating room staff with technical aspects of patient care, and monitoring/controlling the operating room environment. Responsibilities include cleaning and disinfecting the surgical suite and equipment, managing soiled linen and waste, and caring for ancillary anesthesia equipment. The PCT will also transport patients and supplies, lift and position patients safely, and assist patients with personal care and daily living activities. They are responsible for reporting patient findings and changes to nursing staff, documenting records, and performing technical duties such as oxygen setup, pulse oximetry, specimen collection, and EKGs. Obtaining and recording vital signs, weight, and input/output are also key duties, along with other assigned tasks.

Requirements

  • BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
  • High School diploma equivalency OR 1 year of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic clinical and non-clinical patient care activities under supervision.
  • Assists the operating room staff including the anesthesia providers with certain technical aspects of patient care.
  • Monitors and controls the operating room environment.
  • Cleans and disinfects the surgical suite and/or reusable equipment and supplies.
  • Disposes soiled linen and solid wastes.
  • Cleans anesthetizing location.
  • Cares for ancillary anesthesia equipment.
  • Transports patients, equipment, instruments, specimens and supplies.
  • Lifts and positions patients according to practice standards.
  • Demonstrates an awareness of patient and personal safety.
  • Assist patients with tending to personal care and activities of daily living.
  • Reports findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to nursing staff.
  • Documents necessary records.
  • Performs certain technical patient care duties in the hospital as directed by the staff nurse such as oxygen setup, pulse oximetry setup, specimen collection and EKGs.
  • Obtain and record vitals, weight, and inputs and outputs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
