About The Position

The Patient Care Tech reflects Northwestern Medicine’s mission, vision, and values, adheres to its Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with applicable policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory and accreditation standards. Under RN supervision, the Patient Care Tech performs basic patient care activities and supports the workflow of the patient care unit. This is a part-time, day-shift position.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Current qualification as a Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician, or nursing school student who has completed one semester of clinical work.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS).

Nice To Haves

• Phlebotomy experience.
• Graduate of an accredited Nursing Assistant program or graduate of a phlebotomy course.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, measuring blood glucose, and recording intake and output.
• Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating.
• Report abnormal findings or changes in patients’ physical, mental, or emotional conditions to nursing staff.
• Help keep patient rooms clean and orderly.
• Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and the ability to multitask and function under stressful situations.
• Use critical thinking to prioritize and complete unit work as the needs of the unit, patients, and staff change.
• Serve as a liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments.
• Answer telephone, intercom, and call lights politely; communicate information to appropriate staff, family, or patients.
• Manage overall unit workflow in coordination with the charge RN and/or assistant manager, as needed.
• Perform pre-census work and validate daily admission, discharge, and census lists, as needed.
