The companion follows established policies and procedures for various precautions (suicide, seizure, falls, elopement, restraining) and emergency plans. They provide general patient care duties as directed by the registered nurse, including assisting with personal hygiene, ambulation, toileting, and ensuring the provision and maintenance of special patient supplies. The role also involves meeting the nutritional needs of the patient by assisting with meals, ensuring proper diet selection, and assisting with tray distribution. Communication and documentation are key, including maintaining patient confidentiality, communicating respectfully with patients, families, and health professionals, documenting patient information, and reporting observed changes to the RN. They demonstrate awareness of the patient's plan of care and contribute to efficient unit operations by responding to emergencies and maintaining infection control standards.
