The Patient Care Companion is responsible for ensuring a secure and safe environment by maintaining a continued awareness of safety hazards and observation of the patient. This role involves following established policies and procedures for precautions, emergency plans, and codes. The companion will accompany assigned patients at all times during walks, to ancillary departments, or for personal care needs. They will also provide general patient care duties as directed by the registered nurse, including assisting with personal hygiene, ambulation, positioning, and toileting. Additionally, the companion will ensure special patient supplies and appliances are maintained and respond to call lights. The role also involves tasks related to meeting the nutritional needs of the patient, such as setting up trays, assisting with meals, and ensuring proper diet selection. Maintaining patient confidentiality and communicating respectfully with patients, families, and health professionals are key aspects of this position. The companion contributes to the patient care plan by documenting information and communicating patient needs and observed changes to the RN. They also act as a patient/family advocate, providing comfort and assistance, and demonstrating awareness of the patient's plan of care. Finally, the companion performs tasks related to maintaining patient care standards and unit operations, including responding to emergencies and practicing infection control.
