About The Position

The Patient Care Attendant supports the healthcare team and enhances the patient experience by providing compassionate, hands-on assistance in an acute care setting. Under the direction of a licensed nurse, the attendant helps maintain a safe, clean, and supportive environment, assists patients with daily care activities, and monitors their well-being. This is a full-time position in the Float Pool at Salem Hospital in Salem, Oregon, with 40 hours per week. Multiple shifts and schedules are available, with rotating coverage as needed.

Requirements

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required within 30 days of hire.

• Recent experience in an acute care setting or caregiving is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist with activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, toileting, mobility, and feeding, while promoting patient dignity and independence.
• Observe and promptly report changes in patient condition, including vital signs, behaviors, and physical status, to the primary nurse.
• Provide constant observation and redirection for patients requiring 1:1 care, including patients on suicide precautions, and maintain a safe environment.
• Support patient mobility, turning, and positioning according to care plans and established safety protocols.
• Communicate clearly and respectfully with patients, families, and healthcare staff, adapting communication to patients’ developmental and cultural needs.
• Document patient care, behaviors, and activities accurately and concisely using appropriate medical terminology and system tools.
• Follow infection control practices and keep patient rooms and unit areas clean, organized, and free of hazards.
• Respond promptly to call lights and requests; assist with unit errands, restocking, and organizing supplies.
• Support unit efficiency by transcribing non-medication orders, updating staffing records, assisting with record maintenance, and performing basic clerical duties as needed.
