About The Position

The Ortho-Urology Unit (Ellison 6) is a thirty-six-bed adult inpatient orthopedic/urology/surgery unit. The patient population includes orthopedic and urologic patients who are post-surgical intervention and pre-surgery from Emergency Department, front door or clinical admissions. Working under the direction of licensed personnel, assists patients with activities of daily living tasks such as bathing, dressing, and eating. Also assists with taking patients' temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred
  • Basic Life Support [BLS Certification]
  • Certified Medical Assistant [National Certification]
  • Emergency Medical Technician - Basic [Massachusetts] - Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services preferred
  • Nursing Assistant [LNA - Massachusetts] - Massachusetts Board of Nursing preferred
  • Experience working in patient care/elder care 0-1 years preferred
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong patient/customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Proficient computer skills to work efficiently with electronic medical records.

Responsibilities

  • Performs patient care-related duties and clinical functions as assigned, including, but not limited to, performing and documenting point of care, vital signs, EKGs, bathing and other sanitary needs of patients, transferring and assisting with ambulation of patients, 1:1 patient observation for safety purposes, and phlebotomy.
  • Assist RNs and physicians with other exams and treatments as required.
  • Completes all documentation such as height, weight, intake of fluids and food, output of urine/stool/vomit/other drainage, and blood glucose results in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
  • Assists patients with food tray setup, eating, and feeding, as needed.
  • Ensures that patient rooms are stocked, equipped, and cleaned appropriately, as needs indicate and as patient volumes change.
  • Retrieves equipment from other areas, sets up equipment, cleans equipment between patient use, and reports malfunctioning equipment per organizational policy.
  • Assists with admitting and discharging patients.
  • Facilitates orientation of new PCA team members as directed.
  • Interacts with patients, visitors, and other care team members effectively.
  • Communicates with nursing staff effectively and in a timely manner regarding issues related to patient care and condition.
  • Fosters a positive, collaborative team environment that promotes teamwork and professional growth.
