About The Position

The Patient Care and Observation Technician performs assigned tasks and maintains awareness of pertinent rationale and special precautions, demonstrating competency in performing tasks. This role involves obtaining vital signs, documenting patient information, preparing patients for examination, and assisting with patient care needs. The technician also maintains a safe and clean environment, adheres to standard precautions, and assists with clerical duties and emergency life support measures as directed. This position requires knowledge of human growth and development across the lifespan to meet the needs of diverse patient populations.

Responsibilities

  • Obtains vital signs on all patients according to hospital policy and communicates abnormalities to the nurse in a timely manner: Blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature (oral, auxiliary, or rectal), weights.
  • Documents information on designated portions of the electronic medical record.
  • Relates all patient/family questions to the nurse in a timely manner.
  • Acknowledges patient psycho-social needs and reports information to the nurse.
  • Prepares the patient for examination.
  • Uses proper draping and wrapping technique to maintain asepsis.
  • Performs duties such as application of hot/cold compresses, measuring and fitting crutches, collecting/labeling laboratory specimens, cleaning wounds and abrasions, preparing sterile trays, applying simple bandages and ace bandages, performing surgical skin preps, performing febrile sponge baths, applying restraints as ordered, applying electrodes for heart monitoring, assisting physicians with specialized examinations, performing EKGs, and assisting licensed nurses with admissions, transfers, and discharge procedures.
  • Maintains an environment that promotes safety for both the associate and the patient, including identifying high-risk patients for falls, locking stretcher and wheelchair wheels, putting up side rails, placing call bells within reach, maintaining a clean and clutter-free workplace, assisting patients with positioning, turning, and ambulation, ensuring patients are secured before transport, providing constant patient observation when instructed, and maintaining a ligature-free environment for at-risk patients.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the policy and procedures for protective and restrictive devices and assists in applying them properly.
  • Complies with standard precautions in the implementation of patient care.
  • Assists in checking and restocking patient room with necessary supplies.
  • Maintains patient care areas by cleaning stretchers between patients, handling clean and soiled linen appropriately, and cleaning under mattresses for trauma patients.
  • Assists with the elimination needs of the patient considering privacy, psychosocial, and physiological needs, including assisting with bedpans, urinals, assisting to the bathroom, demonstrating proper technique for enemas, and collecting and labeling specimens.
  • Performs clerical duties as directed.
  • Communicates effectively with the health care team, including answering two-way radios and dispatching messages, and assisting licensed personnel with phone calls, errands, or photocopying.
  • Initiates and/or assists with emergency life support measures as directed by the licensed nurse, maintaining currency in basic life support skills, initiating and/or assisting with CPR during a code blue situation, obtaining supplies for emergencies, and demonstrating standard precautions during an emergency.
  • Performs other related duties as delegated by the licensed nurse, manager, or director of the Emergency Center, including familiarity with hospital policies and procedures, assuming responsibility for patient's personal belongings and valuables, placing used instruments in the appropriate container, demonstrating knowledge of emergency equipment and supplies, staying accessible when on duty, and cooperating with all personnel.
  • Adheres to organizational/departmental health and safety standards, including hospital and departmental safety regulations, disaster plans, infection control policies, fire safety regulations, hazardous materials disposal, emergency codes, and standard precautions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of human growth and development through the life span and ability to meet the needs of patients in various age categories (Neonatal/Infant, Pediatrics, Adolescence, Young Adult/Adult, Adult/Middle Aged, Geriatric).
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
