About The Position

This full-time position acts as a resource to team members in the Patient Transport department at Aurora St. Lukes Medical Center. The role involves providing day-to-day work direction, conducting training, monitoring operations, and ensuring efficient workflow. The Lead Transporter is responsible for coordinating patient transportation activities, ensuring the safety and reliability of equipment, and maintaining positive customer service relationships with patients, families, and staff. This role may also involve performing transporter or dispatcher duties during high volumes to meet department goals.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate.
  • Typically requires 2 years of experience in patient transport.
  • Excellent Communication Skills
  • Demonstrated experience in customer service
  • Satisfactory completion in safe patient handling for transporters within one month of start date.
  • Ability to assess status of equipment to ensure it is in safe working condition.
  • Ability to assess and determine the best routes within the hospital to reach desired destinations.
  • Have a strong understanding of the operational functions within the patient transport department.
  • Must be able to walk up to 95% of the workday.
  • Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, and twist at various times throughout the workday.
  • Exposed to blood and body fluids, contagious diseases, biohazardous materials, and radiation hazards throughout the workday, therefore, protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
  • Must be able to operate all equipment necessary to perform the job, including repetitive use of feet required in working with surgical carts.
  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance.
  • For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other team member, when available.
  • Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a resource to team members, including conducting ongoing training/orienting and providing day-to-day work direction.
  • Assigns, monitors, and reviews progress and accuracy of work, directing efforts and providing guidance on complex issues.
  • Escalates performance concerns to transport supervisor and transport manager.
  • Monitors general department operations, makes work schedule adjustments, issues daily work assignments, and responds to service requests.
  • Transports patients, medical equipment, specimens, and other related items to their destinations.
  • Lifts and transports patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds, properly positioning and securing them using proper body mechanics.
  • Contacts clinical staff immediately regarding changes to a patient's condition or problems with patient's equipment during transport.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day workflow and provides work direction to employees.
  • Coordinates patient transportation activities and provides guidance to staff.
  • Monitors safety and reliability of transportation equipment and recommends purchase of new, replacement, or upgraded equipment and accessories.
  • Maintains equipment and reports equipment needing repairs.
  • Notifies dispatcher when assignments are initiated, completed, delayed, or cancelled.
  • Advises when job priorities may need to be escalated.
  • Responsible for identifying safety concerns and entering safety events in the risk management tool.
  • May work as a transporter or dispatcher during high transport volumes to ensure department goals and standards are met.
  • Develops and promotes positive customer service relationships with patients, patient family members, visitors, and staff.
  • Ensures accurate, timely dispatch of transport requests.
  • Ensures maximum staff productivity.
  • Resolves problems related to patient, visitor, staff, or employee complaints.
  • Recommends solutions for ongoing or recurring issues.
  • Assists with projects and quality improvement efforts.
