About The Position

At Island Health, people are at the center of everything we do. As a part of the Patient Accounts team, you’ll play a vital role in supporting our mission to care for those who care for others. You’ll help create a positive and seamless experience for every team member — ensuring they feel valued, supported, and heard. This role is responsible for the financial activities of the patient from discharge through the billing process ending in final reconciliation of the account. The representative utilizes electronic billing and medical retrieval system, follows up on outstanding accounts and unpaid balances to maximize fee collections.

Requirements

  • Minimum of one year healthcare customer service experience.
  • Working knowledge of CPT-4 & ICD-10 coding and Medicare Review required.
  • Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
  • Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Can communicate effectively in both written and oral form.
  • Familiarity with computers and common MS Office products; Outlook, Word, Excel.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous insurance experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Answers inbound phone inquiries and place outbound calls to resolve outstanding balances.
  • Works with patients to determine eligibility for Hospital programs. Initiates and processes charity application and payment plans through collection, review and completion of appropriate forms based on hospital policy.
  • Answers patient’s questions regarding statements and insurance coverage.
  • Telephones or writes companies with unpaid insurance claims to obtain settlement of claim.
  • Effectively handles all communications, including telephone and email, from patients, and other departments within the hospital.
  • Initiates collection of bad debt accounts.
  • Follows departmental policies/procedures and meets deadlines and productivity standards for work files, including but not limited to: Managing assigned patient accounts, Identifying accounts eligible for transfer to outside collection agencies, Ensuring the accuracy of registration data including health insurance, Initiating appropriate billing, Processing patient correspondence, Collaborating with outside collection agencies, Effectively negotiating payment plans & settlements, Resolving patient account credits.
  • Completing necessary reports to support regulatory requirements
  • Other duties as assigned
