About The Position

The Patient Access Technician (PAT) is an intermediate-level clerical position responsible for accurate patient admission and registration. The role applies service orientation, sound judgment, and independent thinking to daily work. The position is listed at 0.80 FTE, with an evening shift from 1830 to 0300 and rotating weekends, at MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital in Tacoma, Washington.

Requirements

Graduate of a health vocational program such as Patient Access, Medical Assistance, or Medical Billing and Insurance; alternatively, one year of experience performing any combination of admitting, Health Unit Coordinator, patient registration, customer service, or billing duties is required.
Healthcare-setting experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Ensure complete and accurate patient admissions and registrations according to organizational policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Obtain inpatient bed assignments and process inpatient admissions, including applying arm bands, preparing addressograph plates, and completing necessary forms.
Pre-admit scheduled inpatient, outpatient, and ambulatory patients to support a smooth and timely admission or registration process.
Obtain direct-admission information and enter reservations in the computer system to notify other areas.
Conduct comprehensive bedside or telephone interviews with patients, relatives, or representatives to obtain demographic, insurance, and third-party liability information.
Perform eligibility verification and resolve discrepancies; determine the need for financial assistance recommendations and applications, referring patients to a Financial Counselor when necessary.
