About The Position

The Patient Access Specialist- Scheduler performs registration and scheduling for the obstetric department. Welcome and greet all patients and visitors, in person or over the phone. Monitor access to obstetric unit to allow entry only to individuals with the correct identification or authorization. Respond to inquiries by patients, prospective patients, and visitors in a courteous manner. Perform obstetric patient pre-registration, scheduling, admission, transfer, and discharge activities. Collect demographic, insurance, and medical information to ensure an accurate and complete registration. Perform insurance verification, data collection and documentation. Determine medical necessity for scheduled labor inductions and C-Sections based on established medical criteria. Obtain signatures for financial responsibility and treatment procedures from patients or guardians. Acting as liaison to all internal and external customers to facilitate access to hospital services. Initiating contact with insurance companies for verification of benefits and authorization of inpatient and outpatient services and documents patient’s account accordingly. Schedules appointments and instructs patients and physician offices on the appropriate preparation for the specific exam. Coordinates resources including Physicians, staff and equipment for scheduled exams. Resource to internal and external customers for scheduled outpatient exams. Secures all necessary documentation to support the patient's exam including physician orders, authorizations and medical necessity. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • BLS certification through the American Heart Association for Healthcare Providers.
  • 1 year of healthcare experience in the outpatient setting.
  • Knowledge of scheduling procedures and medical terminology required.
  • Knowledge of Healthcare Scheduling Software.
  • Ability to self-direct and exercise good judgment, time management skills and follow appropriate procedures when setting priorities and handling stressful situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent phone etiquette, customer service skills, and computer skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Annual Joint Commission mandatory education requirements, in-service and health requirements including attendance at new employee orientation
  • TB/PPD Surveillance Program
  • Maintenance of required professional licensing and/or certification(s).

Nice To Haves

  • Registration and/or scheduling experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of hospital insurance plans including Medicare, Medicaid, HMO's and PPO's preferred.
  • Familiarity with area managed care plans and contractual terms preferred.
  • Knowledge of Federal and third-party payor requirements.
