About The Position

The Patient Access Representative is responsible for admitting patients into the hospital computer system for various services including ER, outpatient ancillary services, specialty clinics, surgery, and inpatient admissions. This role involves completing necessary paperwork, managing dismissals, handling telephone communications, and ensuring accuracy in all admission processes. The representative must maintain patient confidentiality, adhere to safety protocols, and promote a professional and courteous environment. Additionally, they are expected to collect co-pays and past-due balances, coordinate care with healthcare providers, and actively participate in meetings and quality improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma required.
  • Accuracy in data entry to ensure correct billing practices.
  • Professional phone etiquette and techniques.
  • Excellent people skills.
  • Must be able to type 50-60 w.p.m. and operate standard office machines.
  • Must have ability to function under stress.
  • Must possess emotional maturity to maintain good relationships in multi-person office.
  • Requires judgment to analyze and make decisions.
  • Must have general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. word, excel, bed tracking, internet, med aide, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • One to two years prior hospital/medical office experience preferred.
  • Prior knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
  • Previous data entry experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Admit patient into hospital computer system – ER, outpatient ancillary services, specialty clinic, surgery and inpatient.
  • Complete necessary paperwork based upon admission type and responsible party.
  • Manage dismissals upon notification.
  • Handle moderate amount of telephone usage in all aspects of the job.
  • Complete follow-up and reporting as needed.
  • Review and correct AccuReg errors.
  • Ensure complete accuracy with each admission.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information pertaining to clients, physicians, employees, and CCMH business.
  • Consistently report to work at the scheduled time in a punctual manner and at the assigned job location.
  • Attend all required Safety Training programs and describe responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety and specific job-related hazards.
  • Follow the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens.
  • Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible and courteous environment.
  • Promote effective working relations and work effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra- departmentally to facilitate the department’s/unit’s ability to meet its goals and objectives.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Organizational Integrity Program, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate proper use of office equipment.
  • Collect the current co-pays or coinsurance and past-due balances.
  • Use effective communication principles to coordinate care with other health care providers.
  • Actively participate in meetings, committees, conferences, and in-services.
  • Recognize and communicate issues/occurrences utilizing established lines of authority and assist in identifying ways to resolve variances or unacceptable outcomes.
  • Be knowledgeable of and actively participate in improving patient safety and reducing risk to patients.
  • Comply with Safety and Infection Control & Procedure.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
