About The Position

The University of New Mexico’s Department of Pathology seeks a highly motivated General Surgical Pathologist at open rank on the Clinician Educator track. The department is hiring across subspecialties to support a university-wide workforce expansion, including Gynecologic Pathology, Cytopathology, Breast Pathology, Genitourinary Pathology, and Head and Neck Pathology. Preference will be given to applicants willing to cover cytopathology, although this is negotiable for highly qualified applicants. The position offers a competitive salary, a six-year promotion cycle, and a commitment to work-life balance. The role is based at the University of New Mexico Hospital, New Mexico’s only academic medical center and a Level-1 Trauma Center. The Surgical Pathology Division works with TriCore Reference Laboratory and participates in research collaborations across the Department of Pathology, the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Human Tissue Repository, TriCore Research Institute, and the NIH-funded clinical Translational Science Center. Artificial Intelligence research opportunities are available through a partnership with Albuquerque-based Indica Labs (HALO AI). Faculty provide general surgical pathology and cytology services, participate in diagnostic and teaching activities, and engage with clinical services at the NCI-designated UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center. Translational research may be pursued but is not required for promotion. Frozen-section coverage is provided at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center, 29 miles from UNMH, with Pathologist Assistant and remote digital pathology support; travel costs are reimbursed. No Clinical Pathology, Hematopathology, Dermatopathology, autopsy coverage, or faculty grossing is required or expected. The position includes a fully staffed gross room with four Pathologist Assistants and additional resident coverage, as well as remote/digital frozen-section diagnostic capabilities that allow many after-hours calls to be completed from home. The department has a 16-position residency program and active fellowship programs. Faculty are encouraged to develop professionally through teaching and research in a collaborative environment.
