The University of New Mexico’s Department of Pathology seeks a highly motivated General Surgical Pathologist at Open Rank on the Clinician Educator track. The department is hiring across subspecialties to accommodate university-wide workforce expansion, including Gynecologic Pathology, Cytopathology, Breast Pathology, Genitourinary Pathology, and Head and Neck Pathology. Preference will be given to applicants willing to cover cytopathology, though this is negotiable for highly qualified applicants. The position offers a competitive salary, a six-year promotion cycle, and a strong commitment to work-life balance. It is based at the University of New Mexico Hospital, New Mexico’s only academic medical center and a Level-1 Trauma Center. The Surgical Pathology Division collaborates on research within the Department of Pathology, the UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Human Tissue Repository, TriCore Research Institute, and the NIH-funded clinical Translational Science Center. Artificial intelligence research opportunities are also available through a partnership with Indica Labs (HALO AI) in Albuquerque. The role includes diagnostic and teaching work in an academic tertiary care center with a regional outside consult service. Faculty participate in clinical services for the NCI-designated UNM Comprehensive Cancer Center and collaborate with oncologists in multidisciplinary tumor boards. Frozen-section coverage is provided at UNM Sandoval Regional Medical Center, 29 miles from UNMH, with Pathologist Assistant and remote digital pathology support; travel costs are reimbursed. Faculty grossing is not required, and there is no required or expected coverage of Clinical Pathology, Hematopathology, Dermatopathology, or Autopsy. The department offers a collaborative environment, a fully staffed gross room with four Pathologist Assistants and additional resident coverage, and remote/digital frozen-section diagnostic capabilities that allow many after-hours calls to be completed from home. Additional opportunities include optional translational research, accessible divisional research funds, paid research activities through TriCore Research Institute, and yearly renewing CME funds. The residency program has 16 positions, and the department has active fellowship programs in general surgical pathology, cytopathology, forensic pathology, hematopathology, molecular genetic pathology, and transfusion medicine.
