About The Position

The Pathologist Assistant plays a critical role in supporting pathologists by performing advanced specimen dissection, preparation, and documentation to facilitate accurate diagnosis and patient care. This position involves working closely with pathology teams to ensure that tissue samples are processed efficiently and meet quality standards for microscopic examination. The assistant is responsible for gross examination and description of surgical specimens, autopsy assistance, and maintaining detailed records to support clinical and research activities. By managing specimen workflow and collaborating with laboratory personnel, the Pathologist Assistant helps optimize laboratory operations and turnaround times. Ultimately, this role contributes significantly to the diagnostic process, impacting treatment decisions and patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant biological science or health-related field.
  • Completion of an accredited Pathologists’ Assistant training program.
  • Certification as a Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy, pathology, and laboratory safety protocols.
  • Ability to comply with HIPAA and other patient confidentiality regulations.
  • Strong anatomical and pathological knowledge daily to accurately dissect and describe specimens, ensuring that pathologists receive high-quality samples for diagnosis.
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills are essential for maintaining precise records and managing specimen workflow efficiently.
  • Communication skills are critical when collaborating with pathologists, laboratory staff, and clinicians to coordinate specimen processing and clarify diagnostic information.
  • Technical proficiency with laboratory equipment and information systems supports accurate specimen tracking and documentation.
  • Problem-solving skills help the assistant adapt to complex cases and maintain compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Hospital Specimen experience preferred.
  • Master Degree Preferred
  • 4+ years experience preferred
  • Experience working in a hospital or clinical pathology laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Additional certifications or training in histotechnology or cytotechnology.
  • Strong background in quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills demonstrated in a multidisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens according to established protocols.
  • Assist pathologists during autopsies, including preparation and documentation of findings.
